A clinic estimate and an insurance policy answer different questions. Before booking travel for dental care in China, ask your insurer what your own policy covers and what it excludes. The name of a product or the presence of an emergency dental benefit does not answer every question about a planned procedure.

Describe the purpose of the trip accurately

Tell the insurer that you are considering travel for a specified dental assessment or treatment, along with any relevant itinerary information they request. Ask which policy documents and conditions apply to that purpose of travel. Keep the answer tied to the exact product and policy version, rather than relying on a general sales description.

Separate planned costs from unexpected costs

The CDC advises medical tourists to check their health insurance carefully for services outside their home country and to plan how complications and follow-up would be addressed. Use that as a starting point for your own policy enquiry. It does not mean a particular insurance product will pay for overseas dentistry.

Request written answers to specific questions

  • Does this policy apply when the purpose of travel includes planned dental care?
  • Which, if any, planned treatment costs are covered, and is approval required first?
  • How does the policy address unexpected problems connected with that treatment?
  • What provisions apply to follow-up, additional accommodation or a changed return journey?
  • What limits, exclusions, excesses, evidence and notification steps apply?

Keep provider charges and insurance answers separate

Ask the clinic which follow-up or additional services its own estimate includes. Then compare those answers with the insurer’s written response, marking any costs for which you have no confirmed funding. An advertised clinic guarantee, if one is offered, has its own terms and should not be assumed to replace an insurance policy or an independent follow-up arrangement.

Prepare a contact and document folder

Save the insurer’s assistance number, policy identifier, written answers, clinic contacts and an agreed way to obtain treatment records. Ask in advance how to request help and submit supporting documents. Share necessary details with a travel companion if you wish. This is a checklist for questions, not an insurance recommendation or a promise of reimbursement; the insurer must confirm your actual cover.
